You can't miss out on this traditional Portuguese bread - Pão de Deus

Ingredients for the Bread / Pão:


All purpose flour - 600 grams

Margarine - 60 grams

Egg - 2 large

Milk - 250 ml

Sugar - 100 grams

yeast - 9 grams

Salt - 1/2 tsp

Vanilla Extract - 1tbs

Coating - 1 Large egg


Ingredients for the Paste:


Desiccated coconut -120 grams

Sugar - 100 grams

Margarine - 50 grams

Eggs - 2 Large

Water - 50 ml

Icing sugar to sprinkle

Preparation of the Paste:


* In a bowl, add desiccated coconut and water

* mix it well to hydrate the coconut

* Add melted Margarine

* Mix well and add sugar

* Also add lightly beaten eggs

* Mix everything to make a thick paste

* Keep it aside


Preparation of Bread / Pão:


* In a glass bowl add warm Milk, yeast and margarine, keep aside for 10 minutes to activate

* In a mixing bowl add flour, sugar, egg, salt, vanilla extract and the above activated mixture

* Beat everything for approximately 10 minutes in the food mixer

* Transfer the dough to your work space, knead it with some extra flour so that the dough does not stick to your hand and add more flour if needed to make a soft dough

* Cover the dough and keep aside for 1hr

* Knead again with some extra flour, it shouldn't stick your hand

* Start making medium sized balls and coat it with some flour

* Place them in the baking tray with parchment paper

* Cover the tray with a towel and let it rest for 15 minutes

* Coat the balls with a beaten egg and in the centre add the above prepared coconut paste

* Preheat the oven to 190 degree Celsius

* Let the pão bake for 20 minutes

* After 20 minutes, check with toothpick, if well baked transfer the pão on the rack to cool

* Sprinkle some icing sugar over them







* The tasty typical Portuguese Pão de Deus is ready to eat with butter and / or cheese.
